Pasadena Home Batteries: Backup Power, Rebates & Utility Control

Compare Pasadena battery backup needs, PWP rebate eligibility, future demand-response obligations and documented reserves.

A home battery has two different ratings

Kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe usable energy storage, while kilowatts (kW) describe the power it can deliver at one moment. A nominal 10 kWh battery carrying a constant 1 kW load would have a theoretical 10-hour runtime before losses, battery reserves and actual usable capacity reduce it.

Have an electrician identify critical circuits: refrigeration, essential lights, internet and selected outlets often matter more than backing up every appliance. Ask whether the installation safely islands from the grid and whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage.

What PWP's written battery rebate terms say about future VPP participation

PWP announced a Solar Power and Battery 101 webinar for November 5, 2026. Its public event listing describes planned topics, not a published transcript or confirmed statements by speakers. The currently published battery rebate terms do not specify a guaranteed minimum backup reserve or a percentage of charge a future program will leave available. Do not rely on purported seminar examples as contractual battery-control settings.

PWP's published battery rebate terms require qualifying recipients to enroll in the first technically applicable demand-response or VPP program within 90 days after launch and participate for at least 36 months. The terms warn that declining without an approved exemption, or exiting during the first 12 months, may trigger a prorated clawback of 20% of the incentive. Ask PWP about exemptions, battery reserve, event limits, equipment telemetry and control settings before signing.

Battery safety and the correct application date

The published PWP criteria specify a new UL 9540 battery energy-storage system using UL 9540A-tested components, installation by a licensed C-10 electrical contractor, a minimum two-hour duration at continuous rating, at least 85% round-trip efficiency and compatible remote telemetry. The battery must have a manufacturer warranty of at least ten years with at least 70% end-of-term capacity.

For batteries, the 180-day rebate application period is measured from final permit approval, not necessarily from the date PWP issues a solar permission-to-operate letter. PWP lists approved rebate payments in roughly six to eight weeks.

Understand what happens during an outage

Traditional grid-tied solar shuts down in a grid outage to prevent unsafe export. Appropriate battery, inverter and isolation equipment can power selected household circuits without feeding the disconnected grid.

The owner's chosen backup reserve and any future utility program setting may interact. Do not assume PWP can or cannot override a reserve until the actual program contract and equipment implementation are published.

Adding storage to existing Pasadena solar

PWP publishes a separate residential battery rebate for qualifying new, customer-owned battery systems installed from January 1, 2026. Its published battery criteria do not require the home to buy a new solar array at the same time. An existing-solar retrofit still needs PWP review of the specific account, equipment, permit and interconnection; do not assume a solar array expansion qualifies for another solar rebate. Ask about inverter compatibility, additional wiring, revised permits and whether the old inverter can remain.

Questions to ask about a battery warranty

Get a written manufacturer warranty of at least ten years and verify the battery's covered capacity retention, throughput or cycle limits, replacement labor coverage and who provides support if the installer closes. PWP currently requires at least 70% capacity at the end of the stated manufacturer term.

Ask for a load plan showing essential circuits and a worst-case outage scenario. A 10 kWh battery with a low continuous output rating cannot necessarily start or support large air conditioners, pumps and electric stoves simultaneously.

Do not confuse future program dispatch with outage backup

Demand-response programs and a home's outage backup serve different needs. The actual future PWP program contract, equipment integration and homeowner configuration—not a generic illustration—must establish any dispatch schedule, emergency reserve, permissible opt-outs or event frequency. Do not promise that a battery will retain a particular percentage of charge after a utility event.

The published rebate agreement already establishes a 36-month future enrollment commitment for technically eligible systems. Read it before accepting the rebate even though detailed program operations may not yet be active.

Homeowner questions, answered

Tap a question to expand its answer.

Will PWP drain my home battery completely?

PWP's published battery rebate terms do not state a universal guaranteed backup-reserve percentage. Obtain the applicable future VPP agreement, equipment-specific dispatch controls and written reserve provisions before relying on any minimum charge level.

Can I set a minimum battery charge?

Many battery systems support reserve settings. Confirm the model, permissions and future PWP program interaction in writing.

Will a 10 kWh battery run my whole home for 24 hours?

Not necessarily. Runtime depends on usable kWh, inverter output, household load and solar recharging. Get a circuit-specific runtime estimate.

Can a battery be added to panels installed years ago?

Often yes, with compatible hardware, inspections and approvals. Ask an installer to review the original system and PWP's current rebate rules.

Could the utility recover part of my rebate?

PWP's published conditions describe a possible prorated clawback of 20% of the original incentive if a technically eligible recipient declines first applicable enrollment without an approved exemption or exits within the first twelve months. Check the agreement.

Can a battery qualify even without solar?

PWP's battery application includes a new standalone battery option. All its specific ownership, technical, electrical and documentation requirements still apply.

What happens after I apply for a battery rebate?

PWP says it reviews submitted permits, paid invoices and the VPP agreement and generally issues approved rebate checks in six to eight weeks. Funding and eligibility are not guaranteed.
