One cabinet, several capacity configurations

Generac lists PWRcell 2 configurations from 9 to 18 kWh of usable energy using 3 kWh battery modules. Maximum continuous power increases with module count, from about 5.2 kW in the 9 kWh configuration to about 10.5 kW at 18 kWh.

That means capacity and output can be matched more closely to the home's needs instead of choosing only one fixed battery size.

Backup architecture

Generac's Smart Disconnect Switch supports whole- or partial-home backup configurations and is designed to coordinate the storage system with the home's electrical service.

For a homeowner, the key question is not whether the system is called whole-home capable; it is whether the specific installed configuration can support the loads you care about.

Where Generac can be distinctive

Generac has a long history in standby generators, and PWRcell 2 can be part of a broader backup conversation in homes that also consider generator support.

If a generator is part of the plan, have the installer explain exactly how generator and battery operation interact and which equipment is compatible.

Sizing the cabinet

A smaller configuration may be enough for critical loads. Larger configurations extend runtime and increase available continuous power.

Use actual appliance and HVAC loads rather than square footage alone when choosing module count.

What to compare

Compare usable kWh, continuous output, round-trip efficiency, warranty throughput, backup equipment, installed cost and whether service is handled by the same company that installs the system.

Questions worth asking

  • Which PWRcell 2 module configuration fits my load?
  • Will my installation be whole-home or partial-home backup?
  • Can it coordinate with a standby generator?
  • What continuous power is available from my chosen configuration?
