SolarEdge Home Battery: DC-Coupled Storage for SolarEdge Systems — homeowner solar guide

Designed as part of one ecosystem

SolarEdge's North American Home Battery 400V lists 9.7 kWh of usable energy and 5 kW continuous output per battery, with up to three batteries supported per compatible inverter.

Its biggest distinction is not simply battery capacity; it is the DC-coupled relationship with SolarEdge Home Hub inverters.

What DC coupling changes

Solar energy can be stored directly on the DC side before being converted for household use. SolarEdge cites a 94.5% peak round-trip efficiency for the system.

Efficiency is useful, but the homeowner should also compare usable capacity, backup power, system cost and whether the home already uses compatible SolarEdge equipment.

Retrofit versus new installation

For a new SolarEdge system, an integrated battery can simplify system design. For an existing system from another inverter ecosystem, switching architectures can add complexity.

Ask whether your current inverter can remain in place, whether it must be replaced, and which costs belong specifically to the battery retrofit.

Backup requires more than the battery

Whole- or partial-home backup requires the appropriate SolarEdge backup interface and compatible inverter setup. A battery alone does not automatically create outage power.

Ask for the backed-up circuits and maximum simultaneous load in writing.

When this product may fit best

Homeowners already committed to SolarEdge solar may value a single-vendor solar-and-storage ecosystem. Others should compare the integrated design against more inverter-agnostic AC-coupled systems.

Questions worth asking

  • Is my current SolarEdge inverter compatible?
  • How much continuous backup power will I have?
  • Does the quote include the backup interface?
  • What changes if I add a second or third battery?
