A smaller battery that scales in modules

Enphase lists 5.0 kWh of usable capacity for each IQ Battery 5P. The battery is AC-coupled and includes embedded grid-forming microinverters, with a continuous output rating of 3.84 kVA per unit.

That modular design can be attractive when a homeowner wants to build capacity in steps or match storage more precisely to a smaller home's loads.

Why power density matters

A battery's stored energy is only part of backup performance. Enphase designed the 5P with relatively high output for its 5 kWh capacity, which can help with short-duration high-load events compared with lower-power batteries of similar size.

For larger homes, several units may be required not just for runtime but to deliver enough simultaneous power for HVAC, pumps or other heavy loads.

A natural fit with Enphase solar

The 5P fits naturally into an Enphase ecosystem because both solar and storage use distributed power electronics. Homeowners with existing Enphase microinverters may find that architecture straightforward to understand and monitor.

Still, the installer should explain system controller requirements, communications, backup circuits and whether the existing solar equipment is fully compatible with the proposed storage design.

How to think about one, two or more batteries

One 5 kWh unit may be enough for essential circuits or limited time shifting. Two or more can increase both energy and available output.

Ask for modeled overnight consumption and a real list of backed-up loads before deciding how many units to install.

What to compare against larger batteries

A modular system can offer flexibility, while a larger single battery may reduce the number of wall-mounted components. Compare total installed price, usable kWh, power, space, warranty and service—not just the per-unit battery price.

Questions worth asking

  • How many IQ Battery 5P units does my home actually need?
  • What continuous backup power will the full system provide?
  • How does it integrate with my existing Enphase solar?
  • Which controller and electrical equipment are included?
