How Many Home Batteries Do I Need? A Sizing Guide for Larger Homes
A practical way to size battery storage using kWh, power demand, backup hours and the loads you actually want to keep running.

Start with the loads, not the house size
A 5,000-square-foot home with gas appliances and modest HVAC use can need less battery than a smaller all-electric home with two EVs. Battery sizing starts with what you want to power and for how long.
List essential, preferred and nonessential loads.
Estimate daily backup energy
Add the average watts of backed-up loads and multiply by expected operating hours. Convert watt-hours to kWh. This gives a rough energy target before allowing for efficiency losses, battery reserve and solar recharge.
For example, a home averaging 2 kW overnight for 10 hours uses about 20 kWh before those adjustments.
Check simultaneous power
Even if 20 kWh of storage is enough for runtime, the battery system also needs enough kW output to operate the largest simultaneous loads and start motors.
That is why two batteries can sometimes be needed for power even when one battery appears large enough on energy alone.
Include solar recharge realistically
Daytime solar can reduce the battery count needed for multi-day resilience if the array is large enough and weather cooperates.
Do not assume a full recharge every day without modeling seasonal solar production.
Leave room for future electrification
EVs, heat pumps, electric water heating and ADUs can increase future demand. You do not always need to buy all future capacity now, but choose a platform with a sensible expansion path if those loads are likely.
Questions worth asking
- What is my average backed-up kW overnight?
- What is my largest simultaneous load?
- How much solar recharge is realistic in winter?
- Can I add batteries later without replacing the system?
